Do you have to be an upperclassmen to do undergraduate research?
Absolutely not! You can start research as early as your freshman year. Start approaching professors asking if you can assist in their labs or on their projects – you might start by washing labware or researching articles, but you’ll learn how to research early and make valuable connections with possible research mentors.

How can I get involved in undergraduate research?
There are plenty of ways to get involved in research on Auburn University’s campus. First, subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated about research opportunities and events. You can also take a research course, reach out to your professors and peers to find a research project, attend a research event, or apply to become an undergraduate research fellow.

I want to find a summer research project. How can I do that?
The summers between your years at Auburn University are a perfect time to get more research experience. We keep a list of on campus and external opportunities on our website, many of which are summer research fellowships. You can also search for a project in any discipline yourself by visiting webpages of national organizations such as the National Science Foundation or the Oak Ridge Associated Universities. My application calls for a personal statement. How do I write one?
A personal statement is an essay that talks about your research interests and about you as an applicant. Think of it as a personal essay – the personal statement is intended to give the admissions committee an idea of you as a person, as well inform them of your interests and goals. The Office of Undergraduate Research has plenty of resources for aspiring and current undergraduate researchers. We can help you write a personal statement, design a research poster, prepare for a presentation, and more.

Can I be paid to research?
Yes, you can. Keep in mind that not all research projects are paid – especially if you are just beginning undergraduate research or assisting a professor with their project. However, there are plenty of opportunities for funding. Many external research opportunities are research fellowships that include stipends. You can also apply to be an Auburn University undergraduate research fellow, which includes a stipend for research.
